Bumping consists of inserting a manipulated key into the cylinder and tapping it gently until the pins are aligned, managing to open the lock in seconds and leaving hardly any trace. It is a silent and widespread method.
An anti-bumping cylinder is specifically designed to block this type of attack using reinforced springs of different hardness and an irregular distribution of the pins. Depending on the model, they can also protect against:
- Picking: internal manipulation of the pins using lock picks.
- Drilling: drilling the cylinder with a drill bit to destroy the pins and unblock the turn.
- Impressioning: key duplication by marking the impressions of the pins — highly silent and difficult to detect.
- Snapping or extraction: gripping the cylinder with a wrench to break it or tear it out of the door.
